Summary | Convocation Address
This is a convocation address by Varghese Kurien, a renowned Indian and social entrepreneur to the students of the South Gujarat University on 16 January, 1988. Mr. Kurien was well aware about the problems of poverty in India so he wanted the future employees of India in any field to deal with the problem faced by Indian people and he also wanted the graduates to solve them. The co-operatives in the field of dairy industry which was launched by Mr. Kurien in Anand of Gujarat had become a successful effort and had made Mr. Kurien quite confident that in other parts of India also such revolution in dairy industry could be brought about.
He was also aware that the traders who traded with the farmers gave very less profit to them and the entire profit went to the private traders. After Kurian's effort of organizing, the dairy industry flourished on a co-operative basis. This profit went directly to the farmers now who not only became good income holders but also became a part in the entire process of milk supplying till minting money. Mr. Kurien had converted a milk deficient country to a milk surplus country. Mr. Kurien also wanted the graduates to do things to make the country problem free and self-reliant and self-sufficient. In this, the students will face many problems but they should not give up and help the Indians to come up in their lives.
What oppositions did the White Revolution face and how was it controlled?
The lesson "Convocation Address" by Mr. Kurien gives us the vivid picture as to how the co-operatives were formed and how they were managed efficiently. As the co-operatives were formed for the farmers and a revolution was experienced in the daily sector, this was known as White Revolution which faced a lot of opposition. Every new beginning is opposed and White Revolution was no exception. It was opposed by politicians, bureaucrats, middlemen, merchants and traders. The countries which held a high position is supplying milk to milk products producing companies also became tensed because of India's massive milk production.
Hence, they also opposed the movement. Even some scientists who gave reasons on economic, social and metaphysical basis which held no proper ground also opposed the White Revolution. As always positive efforts win, so the efforts of farmers bore fruits and the opposition was suppressed as farmers were more organised and all the good people from all the spheres supported the farmers and the dairy revolution. Thus, with their effective participation of farmers, and the help rendered to the farmers by the co-operatives, a great help came from alter spheres which were happy supporters of the revolution also. They wanted poverty to end and thus supported the poor farmers in becoming self-sufficient, self-reliant, organized and modern people.

Operation Flood which was started by Mr Kurien and his colleagues was a White Revolution as it brought revolutionary changes in the lives of daily farmers. Farmers who were just the main spectators even after having good milch cattle were not directly involved in all the steps of food processing like trading and gaining a handsome profit. Now the farmers were also technically qualified as they were guided by professional managers. They also were not exploited by the traders but they were more efficient and systematic profit holders and all this was possible because of Operation Flood. It made the farmers realize their competency and their ability to do something positive and come up from their low financial position.
